Renita’s career began at a Black-owned design firm in Minneapolis, where she was the sole white woman on the team. This role-reversal was a transformative experience, exposing Renita to the importance of diversity in creative endeavors. Working with a diverse range of clients, including the Minneapolis Urban League and the NAACP, Renita witnessed firsthand the power of representation and inclusivity in driving meaningful change.
Throughout her career, Renita encountered numerous challenges as a woman in the design and marketing industry. From facing instances of marginalization to witnessing talented women leave their roles due to institutional obstacles, Renita understood the need for change. One pivotal moment occurred mid-level in Renita’s career when, in her first week as an internal Creative Director, she requested access to the overall marketing budget to assess the marketing spend. Her boss, the VP of Marketing, dismissed her request, saying, “Oh no, you don’t need to know that. You just need to make things pretty.” This experience highlighted the systemic barriers and gender biases prevalent in the industry, fueling Renita’s determination to advocate for a more inclusive and equitable environment for women.

After establishing herself as a leader in the design industry and successfully running her own design firm for over 20 years, Renita’s journey took a pivotal turn. The events of 2020, particularly the tragic murder of George Floyd and the ensuing racial reckoning, served as a wake-up call for Renita. Reflecting on her privilege as a white cis-gendered woman, Renita realized the importance of actively confronting and dismantling systemic injustices. It was a pivotal moment that inspired Renita to take action and create a space where women of all backgrounds could thrive and succeed.
With a clear vision and unwavering determination, Renita founded Addwomxn—a community-driven agency dedicated to celebrating diversity, empowering women, and prioritizing inclusivity. Addwomxn is more than just an agency; it’s a vibrant community where women come together to collaborate, innovate, and uplift one another. Renita’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is woven into the fabric of Addwomxn’s culture and operations. From cultivating meaningful relationships with talented individuals to fostering a culture of belonging and respect, Renita and the Addwomxn team are leading by example, setting a new standard for the design industry.
